In 2016, the University launched the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), a five-year initiative to promote a mindset on experiential learning, which is reinforced through the actions verbs in the title “Connecting, Doing, and Making”.  There are four programs associated with the initiative that reach across campus and disciplines:

  • Connect the arts and humanities and the sciences or social sciences (Integrated Curricula);
  • Bring novel research projects into undergraduate courses (Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences or CUREs);
  • Integrate Makerspace projects into courses (Makerspace); and
  • Provide more infrastructure around undergraduate research (Research Exposure).

There are five Carolina QEP Requests for Proposals available to develop new courses or revise/reinvent existing courses:

RESEARCH RELATED SKILLS COURSES

RRS courses can be stand-alone courses or students in RRS courses can be enrolled in a research-intensive undergraduate research course and enroll in an additional 1-credit recitation section that will meet weekly in group settings similar to “journal club” or “research group” meetings.  Course could be organized around a specific area of research or may be more general.  The goals for student learning include critical analysis of scholarly literature, scholarly writing, and oral communication of research.

Award Amount:  Awards will provide up to $3,000 in salary support for course instructors (i.e. overload for faculty or stipend support for postdoctoral fellows) that also attend a year-long faculty learning community.

Application Deadline:  Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at 5:00PM

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH CONSULTANT TEAMS

URCT’s are small “strike teams” of students from multiple disciplines who execute well-defined, one semester projects guided by a faculty advisor. Students will register for a 1-credit course (IDST 195) under the supervision of the faculty advisor as part of the award.

Award Amount:  Awards will provide up to $5,000 per team to cover costs of conducting the project (e.g. supplies, travel, etc.), graduate research assistant support, and/or faculty adviser support.

Award Amount:  Awards will provide up to $5,000 in salary support for course instructors that also attend a year-long faculty learning community. Funds available to cover costs of conducting the project (supplies, graduate research consultants, etc.).

INTEGRATED CURRICULA

The “Integrated Curriculum” program is designed to incentivize and facilitate innovative co-teaching opportunities that combine quantitative natural and/or social science with the arts and/or humanities.

Award Amount:

Awards will provide up to $10,000 as a course development grant to be spent on items such as summer salary, travel, equipment, materials, or software that may be necessary to create the course and instructional budget funds to the home departments of participating faculty members for the first three times their course is required to be offered (up to $15,000 per course offering to be shared between two units.
